    A) IN A WRONG PATH
The characters followed the eastern path. Axel got tired because the path was going up. He saw plants and animals preserved in the rock. He showed his uncle a shell of an insect preserved in the rock. This meant they might have taken the wrong path.
They walked for five days in the eastern passage. At last, they came to a blank wall with no way past it. So, they had to go to the crossroads to take the western passage.

    B) TAKING THE WESTERN PATH
When they reached the crossroads, Axel was very thirsty and tired. He fell down and his uncle gave him the last drops of water they had.
Axel was able to walk. He tried to persuade his uncle to stop the journey and go back. The Professor promised to do so if they did not find water the next day.

    C) FINDING WATER
They followed the western passage. They walked all day. Then they heard the noise of running water on the other side of the rock.
Hans worked for an hour with his pickaxe and made a large hole in the rock. A jet of boiling water burst out at him and he cried out.
When the water cooled, they drank and filled their bottles with water. They left the hole in the wall as it was so that the water ran beside them to show them the quickest way down.
Axel was now eager to continue the journey. They went down quickly because the rocks were like steps.

    D) AXEL LOST HIS WAY
The Professor used his instruments to calculate their position. They were now under the Atlantic Ocean.
Axel was used to walking quickly. Sometimes, he felt pain in his ears because of air pressure. The Professor advised him to breathe quickly.
Axel went in front of them holding the torch. When he turned, he found himself alone. He waited for them but they did not appear. He called but there was no answer. He did not find the running water beside him. He lost his way. He fell down and dropped his torch. It was broken. He ran back like a madman in the darkness. At last, he fell down on the floor and fainted.
